Our Story
Meet Mayra, your tutor
Mayra is a passionate Spanish teacher who holds a bachelor’s degree in Foreign Languages Teaching. With more than 10 years’ experience – 5 years as an English /French teacher in Colombia, and 5 years as a Spanish teacher in Australia – Mayra has a thorough grounding in different language learning approaches such as Communicative Approach, Task-Based Learning and Action Oriented Approach, all of which inform her teaching practice.
She has worked with students from a wide range of backgrounds, ages and levels. Lessons are tailored to students’ individual needs, learning styles and goals, as well as delivering efficient, fun and communicative lessons. Each student has their own milestones – and Mayra ensures they’re met!
One of the main reasons why she loves teaching Spanish is bonding with her students. She loves getting to know them, sharing cultural insights about the language and (why not?) sharing funny memes while having a coffee! She truly cares about her students, which might be why some of them declare Spanish class to be their favorite time of the week.
What is ‘La mochila’?
In standard Spanish, la mochila is a good match to the English word backpack. Both mean a bag you take with you on your travels, filled with the useful things you’ll need as you journey from one adventure to the next.
Which is exactly what our La Mochila aims to do: equip you with the language and cultural insights you need to explore the riches of the Spanish-speaking world.
But there’s another layer too. In Colombia, las mochilas is the name given to intricately-patterned bags woven by the indigenous Wayuu people of the north (top image). And the distinctive concentric circles of Colombia’s traditional sombreros vueltiaos (lower image) have also found their way into our branding. Some subtle reminders of the pride Latinos feel about their local culture. ¡Viva Colombia!
Reviews
I have been taking lessons with Mayra remotely for nearly a year after having previously been a student of hers at a language school in Sydney. Our lessons are very well paced and structured, using a lot of interactive materials to emulate the classroom experience over Zoom. Mayra clearly dedicates a lot of time planning the material and resources for each lesson, and the follow-up optional homework modules. She has been very flexible around adjusting lessons times around my work travel requirements and it is a pleasure to be her student.

Mayra is an incredibly dedicated, passionate, and knowledgeable Spanish teacher. She very much loves the work that she does and has helped me to achieve my goals by offering individualized and structured classes. She has taken into account my preferred style of learning and incorporates this into her lesson plans. She teaches at a pace that suits my needs, and always has engaging activities to aid learning and make the lessons fun! I highly recommend Mayra to anyone looking to learn Spanish and can guarantee that they will love the classes just as much as I do!
